Dreaming of traveling to Tanzania?

Why not consider combining that dream with a meaningful volunteer partnership?  We know how incredibly rewarding it is to volunteer at a grassroots level and to be able to have a direct effect on a community.  Whether you are an individual looking for an exciting opportunity, a school group looking for a really worthwhile project to support, or a group of friends who want to make a real difference in Tanzania, you are welcome to volunteer with us. We do believe that this is not only a chance for you to challenge yourself but also to experience living and working within an entirely different culture.  Our projects are based in the needs of the community, so you can choose from visiting patients affected by HIV/AIDS, working with children at orphanages or street children centres, support women development projects, environmental projects e.g. trees planting at local schools.

Volunteering with Maskani Pride comes with no fee! It is our policy that if you are willing to volunteer your time and energy to our projects, you shouldn't have to pay for it. We only ask our volunteers to donate a one-time non-refundable application fee of US $50 to register as a Volunteer with us. This money is used to cover the costs of administration, organisation with the projects and the town tours on your arrival. The only additional costs are for your accommodation and the volunteer visa fee, please visit the rates page for more information.

Below are some of our projects that we currently work with….

The number of vulnerable and orphaned children in Tanzania by the devastating effects of HIV/AIDS and other illnesses such as TB increases daily. There are many orphanages within Arusha and Moshi. There are two main types of orphanages throughout Tanzania, day orphanages and boarding orphanages. The day orphanages are run like schools where children attend during the day and go home to stay with family friends or relatives in the afternoon.  Boarding orphanages run around the clock and are usually overcrowded and understaffed due to high demand and the expenses associated with running them. Volunteers in this placement will be able to feed the children, teaches Basic English, arts and crafts, sports and games and assist with the overall care of the children.

The matter of the environment is one often overlooked in Tanzania. At MASKANI PRIDE, we have a project that aims to address environmental issues through education and other ideas. Whether you have environmental studies background or not, you are welcome to join us in this race to conserve our environment. Volunteers in this project will work hand on hand with the environmental organizations firstly to educate groups of people in schools or orphanages about the different environmental challenges and help them to identify possible solutions. Volunteers will also be able to plant trees and take care of the gardens by visiting the schools and orphanages for sustainability.

Volunteers on the teaching project in Tanzania work in government schools or orphanage schools, English-medium schools,   where the presence of volunteers is beneficial in opening the minds and broadening the horizons of the students, along with exposing them to native spoken English. Children in Tanzania love to attend school, often starting as young as 3 years old, and wherever possible, children hope to stay in school until at least 14 years old, as education is highly valued in Tanzanian society. Teaching volunteers work by themselves or alongside local teachers and other volunteers, teaching subjects such as, English, Math, Science, Social Studies (Geography and History), Art and Physical Education.  Volunteers are required to assist the local teachers with daily lessons, providing one-on-one attention to the students.

As in many other African countries, there is a severe and widespread HIV/AIDS epidemic in Tanzania. HIV/AIDS is a serious challenge and if left uncontrolled, complications will continue to arise. Many hospitals, clinics and local NGO’s facilitate HIV/AIDS testing, counseling and awareness campaigns. Interns and Volunteers help is needed to support ongoing activities and programs.

Collaboration with local groups and organizations helps foster awareness amongst local communities. Maskani Pride’s volunteers, hospitals, NGOs and community groups are helping prevent infection and loss of life and are improving the lives of those already infected. As a volunteer at a Tanzanian HIV/AIDS project you can support  the ongoing efforts to stop the spread of HIV/AIDS and help to provide the manpower needed to comfort HIV/AIDS patients in Tanzania.

We are working with a few groups of women who needs support at a local level. These groups of women are often widowed due to HIV/AIDS virus, HIV positive themselves, or looking after the children of deceased relatives. Without education and guidance, these women end up serving their husbands or struggling to provide as a single parent. Volunteers in this project are needed to provide education, help prepare proposals for microfinance projects to assist women in becoming self sufficient, and also support local orphans not necessarily in the form of money but helping them with access to free education, and raising awareness of important health issues.
